Welcome!

I have worked in many different arts through the years – the creative process fascinates me – including theater and dance. My love of theater imbues my writing with a strong sense of physical action and setting, perfect for those early readers learning not only to comprehend words on a page, but also to find enjoyment in those words.

Come in, look around. Get to know me; get to know my art.

You can find all the Grace Erickson Books on Amazon, search for Joan Wittler. All books are available on Kindle too.

You Asked

It seems that many Grace fans are also dog fans.  I’ve received a number of questions about the dog who made a guest appearance in the You Took the Tissues video.  His name is Briar. He is a very tall bouvier des flandres. He walked in while we were filming.  If you missed him, you can see him on Grace’s facebook page.

Most questions can be answered with an email. When a reader asked, "Is You Took the Tissues a real song?" I knew an email just wouldn't be right.  I thought it would be best to answer in word, and song. See the video on Facebook.  The tissue song has over 400 views and counting.                   No Such Thing As Free Goldfish

Picture
A barking kindergartner does not make for a very fun pet. Grace’s youngest brother has taken on the role of family dog while they wait for their parents to agree to a real pet.

As luck would have it, Grace’s best friend’s dog just had puppies—but Grace is pretty sure she prefers cats. How will she get her allergic-to-cats mom and her I-had-fish-when-I-was-your-age dad to agree to a furry four-legged member of the family?

See how the Ericksons take it one pet at a time as they start their menagerie with some free goldfish from the school carnival. But at what cost is free? What happens to the fish—and the family—will have you wondering if a puppy is the right choice for this family.

Excerpts from Kirkus Reviews of No Such Thing s a Free Goldfish -

"Wittler captures young voices well in the narration and dialogue, and she doesn’t allow her characters to find easy answers to complex problems."

"Readers new to this series will be eager to pick up Grace’s previous titles while looking forward to future adventures." Kirkus Reviews

       The Grace Erickson Series

" Meet Grace, star of a great series of middle grade books. Grace is in 5th grade; her books are likely to appeal to 3rd thru 6th grade boys and girls. Humor and "normal" slice-of-life stories. Think Junie  B. Jones meets My Weird School meets Ramona."

                        Walking Stick

Sara Benton runs and jumps onto a moving train.
She is running from the accident that killed her dad.
She is running to help an elderly neighbor reach out to his family.
